Vank Cathedral

In the Jolfa area of Isfahan, where the majority of the Armenian population now live, there are nine churches, of which the most important is the Vank Cathedral, or Armena Perkich, constructed during the Safavid dynasty around 1664 A.D.

Walls soaring to a magnificent central cupola are covered in wonderful paintings of flowers, trees and scenes of the life of Jesus. Exceptional ceramic tile work adds to the richness and glory of the whole, one of the most glorious churches in the city. In the courtyard tombs of some Armenian bishops and martyrs can be seen and a fascinating museum offers information on the history and customs of the Armenian population, together with an interesting collection of antiquities, bibles, dress and weapons.
